More than £630m has been awarded to help cut energy bills across the public sector.

The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme is providing support for measures including heat pumps, solar panels, insulation and double glazing.

The Government said the support would contribute an estimated £650m in savings for taxpayers per year on average over the next 12 years.

Successful applicants include the University of York, awarded £35m to capture energy from beneath the Earth’s surface to help deliver low-carbon heat to buildings on campus, and the National Portrait Gallery which secured over £5m to switch to heat pumps.

Minister for Energy Consumers Miatta Fahnbulleh said: “This investment will see local communities benefit from our sprint to clean power, with warm public buildings, run more affordably.”
